TOKYO – Japan and the U.S. are working to establish a collaborative military strategy for a potential Taiwan crisis that encompasses the deployment of missiles, as reported by Japan’s Kyodo news agency on Sunday.
As per the strategy anticipated to be finalized next month, the U.S. is expected to position missile units in the Nansei Islands of Japan’s southwestern Kagoshima and Okinawa prefectures, as well as in the Philippines, according to the report, which referenced unnamed sources from both the U.S. and Japan.
The Marine Littoral Regiment of the U.S. Marine Corps, equipped with High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) and other armaments, will be stationed in the Nansei Islands, Kyodo indicated.
A U.S. unit focused on space, cyberspace, and electromagnetic operations will be deployed in the Philippines, the report mentioned.
Inquiries to Japan’s defense ministry and the U.S. and Philippines embassies in Tokyo went unanswered on Sunday. — Reuters
