A diminished powerful tropical storm, Fung-wong, locally referred to as Uwan, has departed the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) but could return on Wednesday, as per the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).
Fung-wong, featuring sustained winds of 110 kilometers per hour (kph) and gusts reaching up to 135 kph, was last positioned 365 kilometers west of Calayan, Cagayan, progressing in a north-northwest direction at 10 kph, PAGASA noted in its 8:00 a.m. update.
In a previous bulletin, PAGASA indicated that the cyclone is anticipated to re-enter PAR on Wednesday as it heads towards the southwestern shoreline of Taiwan, where it is likely to make landfall and continue to weaken.
While passing through Taiwan, PAGASA mentioned that regions in the northern section of Luzon are expected to endure blustery winds due to the typhoon’s extensive circulation, especially affecting Batanes and the Babuyan Islands. Nevertheless, most regions of the nation are no longer projected to be impacted.
Fung-wong is then anticipated to emerge over the seas near the Ryukyu Islands, situated northeast of Taiwan, and continue to weaken into a low-pressure system by Friday.—Edg Adrian A. Eva
