Compass Coffee Shop Unveils First-Ever Bitcoin Transaction on Square Terminal in Washington, DC

A patron recently purchased a coffee using bitcoin at Compass Coffee. This allegedly represented the first-ever Square terminal globally to accept bitcoin.

The trial launch, highlighted during DC Fintech Week, was facilitated by Square’s innovative Bitcoin payment system. As per a Compass Coffee X post, the solution functioned flawlessly across various Bitcoin wallets, showcasing the efficacy of open payment protocols and the Lightning Network.

Compass Coffee, a cherished D.C. franchise with 27 outlets, hosted the exhibition and welcomed legislators and fintech pioneers to observe the technology in operation. “Looking forward to seeing this come to Square devices globally soon,” the team shared on X.

    What is Square Bitcoin?

Square recently announced the introduction of Square Bitcoin, which will provide a new array of tools aimed at making bitcoin functional for everyday enterprises — from coffee shops to local businesses.

The platform will enable merchants and small enterprises to accept bitcoin payments, automatically convert a segment of their revenue into BTC, and oversee holdings through an integrated Bitcoin wallet — all from the same interface they currently utilize for point-of-sale and banking.

Square’s technology has become a recognizable presence throughout the U.S. — a comprehensive payment and business management solution that operates directly on mobile devices. It empowers businesses of all sizes with the capabilities to process payments, monitor sales and inventory, and manage customer relations.

The launch will commence on November 10, 2025, with no processing fees for Bitcoin transactions in the inaugural year. Square states the intention is to ensure that using Bitcoin is “as straightforward as card payments,” simplifying what has traditionally been a convoluted process for small businesses.

By embedding Bitcoin directly within Square’s framework, vendors won’t require external wallets or third-party applications. They can opt to retain Bitcoin on their balance sheets or swiftly convert it to dollars.

Miles Suter, Head of Bitcoin Product at Block, indicated that the objective is to transform Bitcoin into “everyday currency.”

For retailers, this could lead to reduced expenses and expedited settlements compared to conventional card networks. For Bitcoin, this development represents yet another stride toward mainstream integration.

Bitcoin can also be utilized as payment in other places; notably, Steak ‘n Shake started accepting Bitcoin payments at all U.S. locations in May using the Lightning Network via QR codes on kiosks and POS systems.

This initiative increased same-store sales by approximately 11% in Q2, halved payment processing expenses, and attracted more customer visits, solidifying Bitcoin as a potent alternative to traditional payment methods.
