In celebration of its 40th anniversary, SM Supermalls has introduced the largest rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) installation on a commercial property in the nation at SM City Fairview, underscoring its dedication to ecological sustainability and corporate resilience. This marks a considerable step toward SM Prime Holding’s Net Zero 2040 objective.
With a 3.785-Megawatt peak (MWp) solar power capability, the SM City Fairview solar PV installation consists of 6,882 solar panels covering a total area of 4.3 hectares and generating an average annual solar yield of up to 5,960-Megawatt-hour (MWh). This indicates that 11% of the mall’s yearly energy usage will now be sourced from solar energy, which is enough to run SM City Fairview’s 44 escalators and all its mall and perimeter lighting for nearly two and a half years. The mall effectively reduces or prevents the emission of 4,133 tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere for each year of operation, promoting climate action and fostering a more sustainable future for Filipinos.
The SM City Fairview solar PV installation also aids the malls’ solar program pipeline and SM Prime Holdings’ Net Zero 2040 aim towards markedly reducing the company’s overall carbon footprint. Currently, SM Prime’s overall rooftop solar capacity stands at 73-MWp and will be further increased to 100-MWp by year-end.
Collaborating with Buskowitz Energy, this initiative allows SM to further diminish its carbon footprint and reliance on the national power grid. It also backs the government’s initiative towards renewable energy for the good of the environment.

The initial Philippine mall to implement a rooftop solar PV installation was SM North EDSA in 2014, boasting a 1.5-MWp capacity. The new installation at SM Fairview enhances the rooftop solar PV system of SM City Santa Rosa, which previously held the record for the largest system at 3.088-MWp capacity.
Hans T. Sy, SM Prime Chairman of the Executive Committee, is leading the way in the property titan’s sustainability initiatives — from energy demand management to potable water and wastewater management, as well as solid waste management, all of which he has championed for over two decades.
