The Medical City (TMC) formally unveiled its newly enhanced Emergency Care Unit on June 30, 2025. The significant occasion was graced by Department of Health (DoH) Secretary Teodoro Herbosa, who explored the renovated facility and observed firsthand how the hospital is transforming emergency services.
Emergencies no longer need to result in disorder, confusion, or lengthy waits. The improved Emergency Room (ER) functions under a FastER system, delivering a more efficient, organized, and compassionate method of emergency care to patients.
FastER is the ER Experience You Never Thought Possible
TMC executives, including TMC President & Group CEO Dr. Stuart Bennett, TMC Ortigas EVP & CEO Dr. Ruben G. Kasala, TMC Ortigas Chief Medical Officer Dr. Gregorio S. Martinez, Jr., and TMC Group Marketing & Business Development Officer Dr. Christian G. Delos Reyes, provided Sec. Herbosa a tour of the modern facility.
Upon a patient’s arrival at the ER, an emergency medicine physician assesses their condition and provides an immediate and precise clinical evaluation to ascertain the urgency of the situation. Based on the assessment, patients are directed to suitable care zones while remaining informed via a digital queueing system that promotes transparency.

Cases needing urgent yet non-critical care, such as moderate injuries or infections, are treated in the Urgent Care Area. Conversely, patients with matters that are not immediately pressing are taken to the Non-Urgent Area.
Those facing life-threatening conditions, such as cardiac arrests, strokes, or sepsis, are attended to in the Emergent Area, which is fully equipped for swift intervention by dedicated emergency teams.
TMC’s heart attack intervention program is a pioneering effort in the Philippines and one of only 12 clinical care programs globally to be awarded Joint Commission International (JCI) Clinical Care Program Certification. In this program, TMC physicians can clear a patient’s blocked artery within 60 minutes.
Patients suffering from strokes are rapidly treated by TMC’s Brain Attack Team, which assesses the need for mechanical thrombectomy (MT), a minimally invasive technique to eliminate blood clots. TMC’s MT program has received a 5-star rating from the Society of Vascular and Interventional Neurology.
Enhanced Emergency Care Unit

Moreover, TMC is among a select few hospitals possessing a Mental Health High Dependency Secure Area in the ER — a designated space for patients experiencing psychological distress, ensuring they receive care in an environment that maintains their safety and dignity.
The expanded Emergency Care Unit also comprises a Trauma Room, where patients with severe physical injuries can obtain rapid, specialized treatment; and an Isolation Room specifically designed for situations necessitating infection control protocols. These specific areas enable clinical teams to respond effectively to a broad array of emergency scenarios while minimizing risks to other patients and staff.
Beyond clinical advancements, the ER provides a more serene waiting area, staffed with dedicated Red Coat Ambassadors to assist patients and families with updates and support.
The Medical City ER’s 4-hour Promise
Sec. Herbosa also commended TMC’s 4-hour commitment to patients seen in the ER.
When hospital admission becomes necessary, patients transition smoothly from the ER to their designated room. The entire process is designed to complete the cycle of triage, treatment, and either discharge or admission within just four hours.
“I’m pleased with what you said, Stuart, that it’s going to be four hours. That’s very daring. You know how it is now. Institutions like The Medical City have advanced in enhancing the quality of emergency care within the nation,” Sec. Herbosa stated.
Sec. Herbosa further praised the physician-led triage at The Medical City, pointing out that this will expedite and refine the assessment process for patients.
This transformation is among the initial significant initiatives under the stewardship of Dr. Stuart Bennett, TMC President and CEO, and an expert in emergency medicine. Guided by his knowledge, TMC strives to elevate the standards of emergency care and ensure that every Filipino receives the quality care they inherently deserve.
“Filipinos are renowned for their strength and resilience, but that doesn’t imply they should settle for less,” asserts Dr. Bennett. “Every Filipino is entitled to timely, quality care, and this new ER signifies just the start of how we’re constructing a system that delivers precisely that.”
