The EF is thrilled to unveil the outcomes of the Medalla data challenge, a data hackathon centered around the Medalla testnet ✨

The challenge was open-ended: we requested data tools, visual representations, and analyses of testnet data; essentially, anything that would assist the community in comprehending all the data.

Throughout six weeks, we gathered 23 entries from a diverse array of teams. We were delighted to observe exceptional quality submissions in every category.

Rewards are categorized into three tiers based on scope, scalability, and relevance to the community.

    🥇 Gold ($15k reward)

    • Jim McDonald — chaind, a tool for retrieving data from an operational eth2 client and storing it in a PostgreSQL database. Significantly, this tool was utilized by numerous other teams who submitted to the data challenge.
    • Pintail — a collection of blog articles (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) contrasting client performance, examining network behavior, and analyzing validator efficiency.

    🥈 Silver ($5k reward)

    • Sid Shekhar and Elias Simos — a comprehensive study of eth2 data.
    • Evgeny Medvedev of Nansen — an enhancement of the ethereum-etl tool to eth2, along with a BigQuery database dump of eth2 data.
    • Nate McKervey of Splunk — a blog entry and dashboard investigating Ethereum network health.

    🥉 Bronze ($1k reward)

    Looking ahead

The objectives of this contest were to attract new thinkers into the Ethereum community, encourage them to delve into eth2 data, facilitate its parsing and analysis, and offer valuable perspectives to both developers and the larger community. In that regard, the competition has been tremendously successful, and we believe that many of the tools and analyses generated will prove advantageous as the mainnet goes live.

If you’re interested in continuing from where any of these submissions concluded, please think about applying for a staking community grant!
