It’s always enjoyable to learn about newly awarded grants, but what occurs after the announcement? In this series, we’ll assess projects that are in progress – or have already reached completion. Continue reading to discover some recent milestones and successes achieved by grantees!

Where relevant, the grant recipient is mentioned first, followed by the initiative for which the grant was given.

Fuel Labs for Optimistic Rollup R&D, SparsENS

Fuel Labs is primarily recognized for their development of a UTXO-based model for scalable, trust-minimized optimistic rollups. This versatile team is also working on SparsENS, a stateless ENS subdomain registrar designed to lower transaction expenses for registering ENS subdomains. Fuel Labs’ grant contributed to both these initiatives, and in the past few months, they have achieved significant milestones:

Watch for a SparsENS testnet expected by year-end, and keep an eye on the Fuel roadmap for new functionalities and forthcoming version updates!

    Nomic Labs for Buidler Hardhat

Hardhat, previously known as Buidler, represents a flexible and modular development environment. The recent Hardhat release marks a significant advancement in the protocol, initiating a new era for a project that has evolved from a side hustle into a crucial tool for Ethereum developers. This release introduced an extensive array of enhancements and new capabilities, including:

    • Mainnet forking to replicate mainnet state in a local development setting
    • Tenderly integration for enhanced debugging and monitoring directly within the Hardhat framework
    • Revamped compilation pipeline for faster compilation and the capacity to configure complex compilation arrangements
    • Enhanced support for ethers.js and Typescript
    • And numerous others! The complete list can be found here.

The Hardhat release incorporated breaking changes, therefore be sure to update if you are utilizing an older version of Buidler!

    Hubble Optimistic Rollup Hub

Hubble facilitates the deployment of programmable optimistic rollup chains within a unified hub, enabling users to transition between chains in the rollup ecosystem swiftly and affordably. The initial Hubble grant has recently reached completion, with final milestones achieved including:

    • Transfer-only testnet launch featuring batched deposits, single withdrawals, CLI and REST APIs, on-chain verification, and fraud proofs
    • Testnet enhancements such as transaction and deposit fees, BLS signatures, and variable-length balance and PDA trees
    • Documentation for Hubble libraries, APIs, and commands

Hubble is set to evolve further – indeed, a second grant has recently been allocated for the development of a front-end interface allowing users to engage with Hubble’s BLS signature scheme. Hubble does not belong to any single individual or project, but you can track its advancements on the exceptionally active Hubble Project Github repository!

We promised ourselves to keep this post brief, yet we cannot resist including just a few more:

The list continues to expand, so we will return next month with another update!
