In recent weeks, we have been diligently observing the security and safety situation in Istanbul. Specifically, our attention has been directed towards how developments in Israel and the Gaza Strip could affect the safety of attendees.
We strive to evaluate risks whenever we conduct an event. Regarding Devconnect Istanbul, we have engaged with our event organizing partners, local community representatives, and kept an eye on government advisories that may influence our community or the area. Recently, we have taken an extra measure by collaborating with external risk consultancy services to assess where and how we might need to adapt to reflect regional circumstances.
Before providing further information, we want to highlight two essential points:
-
While the present threat specifically aimed at the Devconnect event itself remains minimal, there exists a considerable risk of major protests, targeted violence, or disturbances in various neighborhoods within Istanbul. These risks may escalate in the coming weeks, should the conflict in Israel and Gaza worsen.
-
There is a significant risk for Israelis, Israeli citizens, and individuals of Jewish faith or heritage. Israel has issued a warning advising all Israelis in Turkey to leave the country without delay.
Consequently, we strongly urge high-risk individuals to take these warnings seriously and reassess their travel arrangements, as we continue to evaluate guidance for others while working towards providing clarity regarding the status of Devconnect events organized by EF.
We recognize that this may cause discomfort for some, but we have made the choice to prioritize the welfare of our community members and believe it’s our duty to share our insights at the earliest opportunity.
The past weeks have involved challenging and emotional decisions for many in our community, whose members hold a variety of perspectives. Besides the risks mentioned, we also acknowledge the physical distance between Istanbul and the core of this conflict, and that a vibrant local community has been active and positive throughout the journey. We have considered feedback from those who would be directly affected, team members stationed in conflict zones, organizing teams, and others who have dedicated their year to preparing for these events.
We will keep providing updates as regional conditions become clearer. Thank you for your ongoing patience during this complex time.
