SAN MIGUEL engages Megawide to develop and construct passenger terminal building at Boracay airport.
San Miguel Corp. (SMC) has engaged the Saavedra-led Megawide Construction Corp. to design and build a passenger terminal building at Godofredo P. Ramos Airport in Caticlan.
In a regulatory announcement on Thursday, Megawide revealed that it has obtained the contract for the terminal building project at the Boracay airport, which is managed by Trans Aire Development Holdings Corp., a subsidiary of SMC Infrastructure.
“This represents another thrilling opportunity for Megawide — to collaborate with one of the nation’s largest and most established conglomerates, SMC, and contribute to realizing its vision of a state-of-the-art facility at the Caticlan airport,” stated Megawide Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Edgar B. Saavedra to the stock market.
SMC, via its infrastructure division, is overseeing the enhancement of Godofredo P. Ramos Airport, commonly referred to as the Boracay airport.
“Our search for a partner-contractor who aligns with our vision of modernizing airports across the nation has concluded with our collaboration with Megawide,” remarked SMC Chairman and CEO Ramon S. Ang.
Megawide announced that the groundbreaking for the new terminal is slated for December.
Mr. Ang previously indicated that the construction of the new passenger terminal building could take up to three years for completion.
San Miguel aims to construct a passenger terminal building with a capacity for seven million passengers, featuring eight passenger boarding bridges.
“We believe that Megawide’s proven history of constructing vital infrastructure through effective and sustainable methods will assist us in delivering a world-class facility within our promised timeline,” Mr. Ang noted.
Megawide, along with its partner GMR Airports International BV, developed Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA).
Since then, Megawide has divested its interest in MCIA, enabling Aboitiz InfraCapital, Inc. to take complete control of the Mactan-Cebu airport.
Additionally, Megawide is also among the developers of the passenger terminal building of Clark International Airport, which is presently operated and managed by Luzon International Premiere Airport Development (LIPAD) Corp.
San Miguel is also pursuing the development of the P740-billion Bulacan International Airport or the New Manila International Airport (NMIA), which it anticipates will commence development work next year.
The company also spearheads the New NAIA Infra Corp., which took over the operations and maintenance of the nation’s main gateway in September this year. — Ashley Erika O. Jose
