There is a necessity for enhanced collaboration among sectors to guarantee that Filipinos living with diabetes obtain thorough workplace assistance, advocates mentioned on Wednesday.

The appeal was articulated by health and patient advocates, together with policymakers, spearheaded by the Philippine College of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism Inc. (PCEDM), coinciding with the observance of World Diabetes Day on Friday, Nov. 14.

PCEDM highlighted that type 2 diabetes ranks as the nation’s fifth leading cause of death, impacting 8.2% of adults or approximately 5.5 million Filipinos, while patients still encounter stigma and insufficient workplace support.

It also stated that diabetes can influence individuals of all ages, from the young to the elderly.

“This year, as we concentrate on diabetes and wellness, with particular focus on those in the workforce, we want to underscore that diabetes does not have to be a debilitating or incapacitating illness,” Dr. Lora May T. Tin Hay, president of PCEDM, expressed in the statement.

She mentioned that with appropriate treatment, individuals with the condition can still lead full and vibrant lives. While managing the illness begins with personal decisions, support from family, coworkers, educational institutions, and even the local community is vital for sustaining healthy blood sugar levels and avoiding complications.

As per the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), various sectors can implement ten essential actions to better assist Filipinos living with diabetes in the workplace.

These actions encompass ensuring safe and private areas for diabetes management, adequate storage for medical supplies, and access to nourishment, water, and other necessities to aid employees in managing their condition.

The IDF further highlights the significance of eradicating diabetes-related stigma, offering flexible work arrangements, nurturing a more inclusive and health-oriented work atmosphere, among other initiatives.

Ms. Hay remarked that inclusive workplaces for individuals with diabetes not only advantage the employees but also benefit organizations by enhancing performance, decreasing absences, and fostering overall well-being.

PCEDM also reiterated its dedication to advancing awareness, policies, and programs that assist Filipinos in better managing diabetes amidst the escalating burden of the condition. — Edg Adrian A. Eva
