An increasing number of Filipinos are engaging in post-graduate education in Spain, prompted by the country’s vast array of visa options, an expert remarked.
“Spain is quite favored among Filipinos due to the diverse programs available,” stated Spain’s Goodwill Ambassador Jessica Isabelle C. Badua during an interview with BusinessWorld on Thursday.
“The rise in Filipino students is attributed to the abundance of visa options,” she noted.
Ms. Badua indicated that the most prevalent master’s programs among Filipinos are in engineering, law, health sciences, administration and management, and the humanities. Most of the students belong to the Millennial and Generation Z demographics.
“I believe Spain provides various programs across all fields of study,” she commented. “Prospective students interested in applying to Spain can discover programs with reasonable tuition, especially at public universities.”
Referring to information from the HTL International School, the average yearly tuition for international students in master’s or doctorate programs at Spanish public universities is estimated to range from €2,000 to €5,500, while an undergraduate degree typically costs between €1,500 and €4,000 annually.
Ms. Badua highlighted that the Auxiliares de Conversación, or the Language Assistant Program, is popular among students who wish to earn while studying.
“Certain universities collaborate with the Ministry of Education in Spain,” she explained. “These institutions provide a master’s degree in education alongside the Auxiliaries de Conversación Program.”
“Thus, students can pursue their master’s while teaching English and earn remuneration,” she added.
The Ambassador also attributed the rising enrollment figures in Spain to visa opportunities that facilitate the pathway to citizenship.
Particularly, options like the Golden Visa and Digital Nomad visa, along with the Ley de Memoria Democrática, which permits descendants of Spanish nationals to obtain citizenship, are among the preferred visas utilized by Filipinos.
“As a result, families have the ability to relocate to Spain since they hold passports. Thus, they move to Spain with their children, who also pursue their education there,” she mentioned.
The Philippines was initially discovered by the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan in 1521 and was subsequently ruled by Spain from 1565 to 1898.
