Innovate NY, a self-identified “pro-digital assets” political entity financed with approximately $100,000 prior to the New York City mayoral election, has endorsed independent candidate and former state Governor Andrew Cuomo.

In a notice issued on Tuesday, Innovate NY supported Cuomo for mayor, with early voting already underway in the contest. The political organization highlighted a platform that encompassed “blockchain, tokenization, public-benefit stablecoins, and artificial intelligence.”

The group, registered as an independent spender with the New York City Campaign Finance Board, received $99,500 from six individuals through two firms, as reported on Wednesday.

Expenditure records reveal that Innovate NY allocated $30,000 on a flyer to back Cuomo and counter Democratic contender Zohran Mamdani, who is presently leading in multiple polls against the former New York governor.

The mayoral race in New York City has garnered interest from numerous participants in the cryptocurrency sector due to its possible influence on enterprises functioning within the largest economic center in the US. Voters will select between frontrunners Mamdani, Cuomo, and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa on November 4.

In the closing weeks of his campaign, Cuomo aimed at cryptocurrency-minded New Yorkers, vowing to establish an Innovation Council with advisory boards for crypto, AI, and biotech if victorious. Mamdani, currently leading in the polls against Cuomo, has predominantly steered clear of incorporating digital assets in his campaign and instead concentrated on economic living issues, such as childcare and affordable housing.

Mayor Eric Adams’ ultimate crypto initiative

Eric Adams, who has been serving as New York City Mayor since 2022, initiated a significant stride towards promoting crypto and blockchain policies in his concluding year in office.

During his tenure, he convened a crypto summit, founded a digital advisory council, proposed that the city create Bitcoin-backed bonds, and recently signed an executive order to launch a digital assets and blockchain office.

Adams declared in September that he would not seek reelection after originally campaigning and gaining support from crypto entrepreneur Brock Pierce. The candidate who triumphs in the mayoral contest will succeed Adams on January 1, 2026.
