PRESIDENT Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. has instructed the leaders of state-run enterprises to resign, a week after a comparable request directed at his Cabinet members, which some interpret as an effort to reclaim whatever political influence he possesses during the latter half of his solitary six-year term.

In a May 26 announcement shared on its site, the Governance Commission for Government-Owned or -Controlled Corporations (GCG) under the Office of the President indicated that state firms are included in the Palace directive regarding courtesy resignations dated May 21.

This aligns with “the President’s stated aim to adjust and reorient his administration’s strategies and priorities in line with public expectations,” GCG Chairman Marius P. Corpus noted in the announcement.

All non ex-officio chairpersons, chief executive officers (CEO) and appointed directors/trustees/members of GOCC governing boards have been ordered to present their courtesy resignations.

“This mandate is designed to enable the President to evaluate the performance of key officials across all government sectors, including GOCCs, and to realign governmental priorities in response to the changing expectations of the Filipino populace, ensuring the administration remains agile, responsible, and attentive,” he explained.

In a supplementary notice dated May 28, GCG stated that CEOs of GOCCs should direct their resignations to the President and submit them through the Office of the Executive Secretary.

For appointed directors, trustees, and members of GOCC governing boards, the resignation letters should be sent straight to the GCG, rather than the Office of the Executive Secretary.

Nevertheless, the GCG emphasized that all GOCC heads should continue to report for duty until the President either accepts or declines their resignation.

“The impacted officials are reminded that until any decision is made by the Office of the President regarding these courtesy resignations, they are to persist in reporting for work and fulfilling their regular responsibilities and roles, adhering to any additional instructions that the Office of the President may find appropriate,” Mr. Corpus stated.

Last week, Mr. Marcos requested all Cabinet members to hand in their courtesy resignations.

Since then, he has retained members of the economic team — Finance Secretary Ralph G. Recto, Trade Secretary Cristina Aldeguer-Roque, Department of Planning, Economy, and Development Secretary Arsenio M. Balisacan, Budget Secretary Amenah F. Pangandaman, and Special Assistant to the President for Investment and Economic Affairs Frederick D. Go. — Norman P. Aquino with contributions from ARAI
