Satoshi’s Wallet Joins Forces with Spark for an Enhanced Self-Custodial Bitcoin Lightning Adventure

Today, Spark has unveiled a new integration with Wallet of Satoshi, one of the biggest Bitcoin Lightning Network (LN) wallets, aimed at providing users with a “genuinely self-custodial Lightning experience,” currently in beta, as stated in a press release issued to Bitcoin Magazine.

“From the beginning, Spark seemed like the missing component,” remarked Wallet of Satoshi. “It offered us the groundwork to thoroughly pursue self-custody – simplifying the intricate aspects of self-custody so we could concentrate on enhancing user experience.”

Being self-custodial, this will enable customers to have complete authority over their Bitcoin. In November 2024, Wallet of Satoshi removed its application from the U.S. Apple and Google app stores due to unspecified reasons, likely tied to a stringent regulatory atmosphere clamping down on Lightning wallets at that time. However, with the regulatory environment now transformed in the U.S., Wallet of Satoshi indicated that this integration will enable them to re-enter and cater to the U.S. market.

Wallet of Satoshi also encountered constraints when crafting its self-custodial Lightning wallet, such as liquidity demands, node intricacies, and channel management expenses, complicating the development of a genuinely self-custodial LN wallet — but Spark has now equipped them with a solution.

“We designed Spark specifically to tackle this precise issue,” the company noted. “Spark simplifies all the complexities for wallets aiming to adopt Lightning. There’s no need to establish channels, be concerned about routing, fund liquidity in advance, or even think about node management. Crafting a Lightning wallet on Spark requires only 6 lines of code.”

Spark mentioned that it will keep expanding new features as the product progresses, and those keen on joining the beta can leave a message on their X post expressing their interest.

On May 22, Breez and Spark joined forces to launch a new version of the Breez SDK, built upon Spark’s Bitcoin-native Layer 2 infrastructure. The SDK accommodates LNURL, Lightning addresses, real-time mobile notifications, and includes support for all major programming languages and frameworks. This collaboration provided developers with tools to integrate Bitcoin payment functionalities into apps employed for monetizing social platforms, cross-border remittances, and in-game currencies.

The previous day, Spark also partnered with Magic Eden to enhance Bitcoin trading by addressing challenges like sluggish transaction speeds, elevated costs, and subpar user experience. The integration rolled out a native settlement system designed to expedite transactions and reduce costs, without relying on bridges or synthetic assets.
