This is a notification from the Next Billion Fellowship Program. Applications are ongoing and available for cohort 6 commencing in October 2025.
Individuals engaging with an application possess a user experience. Groups engaging with a protocol hold a world experience. Numerous worlds intersect with the Ethereum protocol; environments where organizations, communities, or institutions experience trust through coordination. The Next Billion Fellowship serves as a platform to assist individuals innovating new applications and enhancing trust experiences within the world computer.
The narratives of a global protocol are as varied and diverse as the individuals who utilize it. In this update, five Next Billion Alumni recount their experiences in the Fellowship, and four newly accepted Next Billion Fellows are presented.
📰 Devansh Mehta: Impact Certificates and Citizen Journalism
Through Devansh’s marketplace, real-world results from journalism are transformed into tradeable impact certificates, establishing direct funding routes between positive social transformations and the reporters who uncover the truth.
🖥️ Guo Liu: Billboard Protocol for Decentralized Publishing
The billboard protocol established by Guo metamorphoses digital advertising environments into community-governed assets, restoring the internet as a space for meaningful engagement rather than mere attention harvesting.
🌊 Lefteris Arapakis: Fishing for the Commons with Enaleia
Converting Mediterranean fishing communities into environmental guardians through Enaleia’s blockchain-verified supply chain for ocean plastic, establishing a protocol to regenerate our collective sea commons.
🌍 Rebecca Mqamelo: Commitment Pooling as Social Technology
Investigating how blockchain-enabled commitment pooling can rejuvenate indigenous economic traditions in Ocean View, South Africa, converting social pacts into mechanisms for community resource orchestration.
🇺🇦 Valeriia Panina: Volya: Web3 Through the People’s Lens
Chronicling the transformative convergence of conflict, technology, and societal resilience in Ukraine, where cryptocurrency has transitioned from a rapid response tool to a fundamental change in how individuals engage with institutions and trust.
Cohort 5
Mashbean (X: @mashbean) is investigating sturdy digital identity in Taiwan, examining how civic services and essential public infrastructure might gain from the same resilient and trustless characteristics that protocols such as Ethereum provide globally.
Sharfy Adamantine (X: @sharfyae) promotes ecological stewardship by linking climate finance directly to local conservation initiatives and data at Gainforest. By enhancing compatibility and usability of the Hypercerts standard, ecosystem safeguarding can become more financially sustainable for organizations and conservation groups in various shapes, sizes, and scenarios.
Teodor Petricevic (X: @XtXeXo) spearheads blockchain efforts at the UN Development Programme. He will chart Ethereum-centric initiatives within the UN framework and formulate an impact management framework that empowers global development entities – like UN bodies – to efficiently design impact models, assess and evaluate outcomes and impacts, and utilize the distinctive benefits of blockchain technology to foster global development projects.
Robert Cowlishaw (LinkedIn: robert-cowlishaw) is an aerospace engineer pioneering research at the convergence of zero-knowledge proofs, verified execution, and satellite imagery. He is creating a prototype application that automatically and verifiably activates emergency response systems post-natural disasters. His work includes collaboration with the European Space Agency to deploy satellites for monitoring impacted regions across political and systemic barriers.
As we anticipate the upcoming group of Fellows, we’re reminded of the significant role of narrative in influencing Ethereum’s trajectory. The tales conveyed by our alumni demonstrate how blockchain technology can transcend its technical roots to evolve into a mechanism for social transformation, economic empowerment, and ecological revival.
These Fellows exemplify what distinguishes the Next Billion Fellowship: the emphasis is not on technology for technology’s purpose, but on the human aspect of technology. Each endeavor illustrates how Ethereum can tackle real-world issues—from contaminated oceans to communities pursuing economic independence, from farmers to international development specialists.
