A Londoner’s extensive pursuit for an $800 million Bitcoin-filled hard drive concealed in a Welsh landfill has now been transformed into a cross-platform documentary series.
Entertainment firm LEBUL revealed this week it has obtained exclusive rights to narrate the tale of James Howells, the British engineer recognized for losing access to 8,000 Bitcoin back in 2013.
Man’s Discarded Hard Drive Contains Crypto Wealth Equivalent to a King’s Fortune
Howells, an early Bitcoin miner, lost access to 8,000 Bitcoin in 2013 when his hard drive was unintentionally thrown away. At current valuations, that cryptocurrency stash exceeds $800 million.
The hard drive was deposited in a public landfill in Newport, Wales, where it remains despite Howells’ multiple attempts to recover it.
“This isn’t mere content,” proclaimed Reese Van Allen, President of Unscripted Entertainment at LEBUL. “It’s a live-action tech thriller with nearly a billion dollars on the line.”
The documentary project, “The Buried Bitcoin: The True-Life Quest of James Howells,” will encompass a premium series, podcast, and social media campaign. LEBUL aims to weave together themes of environmental challenges, cryptocurrency heritage, and personal perseverance in their narrative.
Legal Battles Continue with Local Authorities
Howells has initiated legal action against Newport City Council several times over the past decade. He has sought permission to excavate the landfill and even suggested sharing any funds retrieved with both the city and its inhabitants. At one point, he requested £495 million in reparations from local officials.
Repeatedly, he has failed in court due to worries regarding environmental harm as well as land regulations. Recently, he lost in Cardiff High Court in 2025, according to reports.
The urgency of his quest has increased as the council plans to close the dump in 2025-2026 to develop part of it into a solar energy site.
Engineer Remains Resolute in Search
Despite ongoing challenges, Howells is steadfast in his ambition to reclaim his lost wealth. Reports indicate that he is considering an appeal to the Supreme Court. He has also hinted at the possibility of attempting to acquire the entire landfill property to access the site.
“Howells’ saga, often compared to a modern treasure hunt, will now reach a wider audience as LEBUL transforms a piece of discarded e-waste into entertainment,” stated one report regarding the new series.
Entertainment Initiative Sparks Enormous Curiosity
The documentary series has already garnered interest from international streaming platforms eager to distribute the content. Some cryptocurrency companies have also expressed interest in supporting the project, according to LEBUL.
LEBUL executives are optimistic that the combination of genuine drama, considerable financial stakes, and unfolding real-time events will make the series appealing to both cryptocurrency enthusiasts and broader audiences unfamiliar with Bitcoin’s early phases.
The firm has yet to disclose a launch date for any aspect of the project.
