Ethereum Foundation Updates: Exciting News Ahead!

The organization is presently engaged in the process of reorganizing its communication strategies. A number of members from our existing communications team in London will soon be departing or diminishing their engagement with the Foundation to explore for-profit opportunities within the Ethereum ecosystem; we extend our best wishes to them. Thus, we find ourselves with both a necessity and a distinctive chance to “reboot” this aspect of the organization and reassess how the Ethereum Foundation engages with the community.

To initiate this transition, we are planning to undertake the following actions:

    • We will strive to downplay Skype, while highlighting Gitter as a platform for real-time interactions among developers. Gitter offers advantages such as (i) the ease of jumping in and contributing promptly, and (ii) chat rooms being public and accessible to all by default. Currently, the primary active Gitter rooms are:

    • We will persist with our overall approach of enhancing permissiveness that we initiated with our recent adjustments to branding guidelines, prioritizing the maintenance of norms grounded in common sense and civility rather than strict regulations. We are not mirroring the path of /r/bitcoin‘s theymos. Conversations regarding EthereumXT (I believe the closest counterpart we have is Expanse, known for its significantly higher gas limit) are NOT prohibited.
    • We will downplay the “ETH DEV” branding (with the exception of “DEVcon”) and redirect our focus towards “Ethereum” moving forward

In the medium term, we are actively re-evaluating our internal strategy, which includes meetups, overall community engagement, trademark policies, developer documentation, and sharing information regarding protocol updates (e.g., the most immediate short-term updates will target the networking level to support light clients, while larger upcoming modifications will pertain to proof of stake, scalability, etc.), along with engaging with the swiftly expanding number of both individual and organizational/corporate Ethereum developers beyond the foundation itself. We will continue to provide more detailed information on these and other subjects as it becomes available, and we invite community feedback on any of these matters.
