Last year, after a three-year hiatus, we emerged from the pandemic more robust than ever and gathered in Bogotá for the largest and some would convey, “finest Devcon to date.” Subsequently, we were often inquired, “wen Devcon 7?” Well, today, we have exciting updates! 😃 🎉
🥁 When will Devcon 7 take place!? 🥁
We are thrilled to announce that Devcon 7 is heading to Southeast Asia in 2024! 🎊
Before you question our timeline, we want to explain why we are planning Devcon 7 for 2024. We deliberated extensively on this. Here’s our reasoning:
1) Enhanced Impact 🌏
One of the remarkable aspects of Devcon VI in Bogotá was the participation of the vibrant Latin American Ethereum community. Given the three years, we gained ample time to interact with local groups, support and empower them, and maximize our influence on a regional Ethereum community.
Our goal is to replicate this effect on the journey to Devcon 7 in Southeast Asia, allowing more time for the flourishing Ethereum community there to develop and expand. We are eager to witness new grassroots movements emerge. 🌱
2) Increased Significance 💥
Devcon VI in Bogotá set a high standard with its community turnout, quality of content and updates, and overall production. Planning Devcon 7 for 2024 grants us the opportunity to maintain these standards for the following reasons:
- Projects and protocols will have time to progress and refine, enabling speakers to present truly meaningful material.
- With additional time for production and brainstorming, we can elevate the event quality once more.
- A more leisurely pace can make the event more accessible for those who wish to engage but prefer not to (or cannot) attend Devcon annually.
- The longer the anticipation, the greater the excitement! 😁
3) Welcoming Subtraction 🤲
This year, there are more Ethereum gatherings and communities emerging than ever on the global stage. As Aya mentioned in her presentation regarding the Ethereum Foundation’s Subtraction approach, we seek to reduce so that you can expand. This applies equally to community Ethereum events, and we aim to create space for local gatherings to grow. After all, the Ethereum ecosystem thrives with a more varied group of participants.
There will be numerous exciting community-led events this year for you to join, speak at, or support instead of Devcon. In summary, we believe that scheduling Devcon 7 for 2024 will yield significant benefits due to the amplified overall impact it will have on every attendee and the community as a whole.
Southeast Asia & Ethereum 🌏
As our principal gathering, Devcon emphasizes bringing everyone together, connecting with external communities, sharing vital updates and informations, and welcoming newcomers to Ethereum.
Ethereum is a worldwide movement, and hosting Devcon in Southeast Asia aligns with our mission of reaching more local Ethereum communities, while also enhancing diversity within the entire Ethereum ecosystem. The Ethereum community remains, in many respects, predominantly Western, despite the fact that crypto usage is more prevalent in Southeast Asia. To exemplify this, four nations in Southeast Asia rank among the top 20 in the Global Crypto Adoption Index, with Vietnam and the Philippines ranking at #1 and #2.
Southeast Asia presents vast untapped and continuously expanding opportunities, reminiscent of those witnessed in South America.
Thus, Devcon 7 in Southeast Asia creates the chance to present a large, fresh, active, and diverse community on the global Ethereum stage.
👉 By the way, we are still assessing specific venues within Southeast Asia, and our final choice will depend on various factors, some as straightforward as venue availability. Certain Southeast Asian communities have already submitted excellent proposals (now under review!), and we are reopening the Forum to allow additional Southeast Asian communities the chance to propose their cities!
The deadline for suggestions is March 15, 2023!
We are eager to discover the rich cultures of Southeast Asia and the diverse locations within this region, from the vibrant streets of Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur to the stunning shores of Bali and Phuket, the majestic mountains of Vietnam, and beyond.
Lastly, we would like to express our gratitude to everyone who contributed proposals for the Devcon 7 location in the forum. Your input has been invaluable, the decision was challenging, and the suggestions will be beneficial for years to come, not solely for Devcon but many Ethereum community gatherings.
