The Protocol Security Research Team alongside the Ecosystem Funding Initiative at the Ethereum Foundation are thrilled to announce the inauguration of the inaugural Ethereum protocol Attackathon featuring a prize pool of $1,500,000, coordinated by Immunefi. The attackathon will take place from November 25th to January 20th and seeks to improve the security of the Ethereum protocol through a large-scale crowdsourced security audit competition.
We welcome the entire Ethereum community — including auditing firms and individual security practitioners — to engage in this crucial event to aid in securing the Ethereum Protocol.

What is an Attackathon?
The Attackathon represents a timed audit challenge designed to enhance the security of the Ethereum protocol. It commences with an educational segment where participants receive guidance on the protocol’s code through live technical demonstrations and instructional materials from the Attackathon Academy. This segment ensures that participants are adequately equipped to detect and comprehend potential vulnerabilities.
Throughout the Attackathon, security researchers will diligently seek out vulnerabilities in the protocol’s code. They will adhere to specific guidelines established for the competition, and only significant and compliant submissions will be rewarded. This segment emphasizes real-time problem-solving and the application of knowledge acquired during the initial phase.
Post-Attackathon, Immunefi will assess and compile the findings into an official report. This document will outline the vulnerabilities identified and recognize the leading researchers, honoring their contributions and expertise.
