Innovative DLT Interoperability Guidelines Unveiled by EEA

Today, the EEA unveiled version 1 of its new DLT Interoperability Specification.

    Overview of the specification

This specification establishes a standardized framework to facilitate communication between various blockchains and distributed ledgers. Adopting this standard minimizes development durations and the probability of mistakes by equipping software teams with a familiar array of interfaces, instead of necessitating the creation of a custom solution for every unique pair of networks a developer aims to link.

The specification was crafted by the Crosschain Interoperability Working Group of the EEA. This group emerged from prior initiatives on interoperability when, in 2019, EEA members identified a need for comprehensive solutions for future challenges. The group has already disseminated vital guidance regarding crosschain interoperability, addressing fundamental topics such as decentralization and security, along with essential technical specifications for recognizing blockchains and associated distributed ledgers. The group also collaborates with various organizations developing software or standards in this crucial domain.

Weijia Zhang, co-chair of the Working Group from Wanchain, states

“The evolution of Web3 will comprise hundreds, if not thousands, of unique blockchain networks, rendering interoperability standards and specifications essential for constructing an integrated decentralized network of blockchains. The launch of v1 of the EEA’s DLT interoperability specification marks a significant achievement, providing guidance and reference implementations for cross-chain messaging, data, and functions. We anticipate further collaboration with colleagues, collaborators, and other blockchain standardization entities.”

The current specification delivers the necessary tools to achieve “full-stack” interoperability, from validating that messages exchanged between two networks are reliable, to developing crosschain applications that integrate smart contracts on different platforms aimed at crafting the next era of robust and scalable solutions for enterprises.

    Experiences in Implementation

EEA recently released a Case Study showcasing one implementation of this specification for a payment-vs-delivery settlement system operating across multiple blockchains. The group is also engaging with additional developers who have either implemented or are in the process of implementing the specification for live deployment, and will persist in publishing case studies while welcoming feedback that may indicate any needed revisions or enhancements.

Anaïs Ofranc, co-chair of the Working Group from Qualitax, indicates

“With the launch of v1 of the DLT Interoperability Specification, we proudly unveil an open standard that reflects our dedication to a cooperative and vendor-neutral interoperability environment. This specification is a critical advancement toward seamless interactions across a variety of distributed ledger technologies, ensuring that novel innovations can flourish irrespective of the underlying platforms.”

    About the EEA:

The EEA represents a worldwide community of blockchain pioneers, adopters, innovators, developers, and enterprises. We accelerate business in Ethereum through professional and commercial support, advocacy and research, standards enhancement, and ecosystem trust services.
