The EEA has unveiled release 1 of its latest DLT Interoperability Specification.

    About the specification

This specification establishes a standardized framework for enabling interactions among various blockchains and distributed ledgers. Adopting this standard streamlines development time and minimizes the risk of errors by furnishing software teams with a familiar set of interfaces, rather than requiring each pair of networks a developer seeks to unite to have a tailored solution created.

The specification was created by the EEA’s Crosschain Interoperability Working Group. This Working Group emerged from previous efforts on interoperability, as EEA members acknowledged in 2019 that the future necessitated comprehensive solutions. The group has previously issued significant guidance on crosschain interoperability, addressing essential aspects such as decentralization and security, in addition to vital technical specifications for identifying blockchains and associated distributed ledgers. Furthermore, the group collaborates with other organizations actively engaged in developing software or standards in this crucial domain.

Co-chair of the Working Group, Weijia Zhang from Wanchain, states

“The future of Web3 will consist of hundreds, if not thousands, of unique blockchain networks, making interoperability standards and specifications critical for constructing a unified decentralized network of blockchains. The launch of v1 of EEA’s DLT interoperability specification is a significant milestone, providing guidance and reference implementations for cross-chain messages, data, and functions. We are eager to continue our collaboration with colleagues, partners, and other blockchain standardization organizations.”.

The current specification supplies the necessary tools to enable “full-stack” interoperability, ranging from guaranteeing that messages exchanged between two networks are reliable, to developing crosschain applications that assemble smart contracts on different platforms to create the next generation of robust and scalable solutions for enterprises.

    Implementation Experience

EEA has recently released a Case Study of one implementation of this specification, focused on a payment-vs-delivery settlement system operating over multiple blockchains. The group is also engaging with numerous other developers who are either implementing or have implemented the specification for production use, and will persist in publishing case studies, as well as examining feedback that suggests any adjustments may be necessary or beneficial.

Co-chair of the Working Group, Anaïs Ofranc from Qualitax, remarks

“With the rollout of v1 of the DLT Interoperability Specification, we are excited to present an open standard that reflects our dedication to a collaborative and vendor-neutral interoperability ecosystem. This specification signifies a vital advancement towards seamless operations across diverse distributed ledger technologies, ensuring that innovations can flourish irrespective of the underlying platforms.”

    About EEA:
