Reports indicate that the Lithuanian national was <a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/krebsonsecurity.com\/2025\/03\/alleged-co-founder-of-garantex-arrested-in-india\/\" rel=\"null\" target=\"null\" text=\"null\" title=\"null\">on holiday<\/a> in India with his family and intended to exit the country. Be\u0161ciokov is anticipated to be handed over to US authorities in compliance with India\u2019s Extradition Act of 1962.<\/p>\n<p>The detention of the alleged Garantex founder occurred after Tether\u2019s <a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/tether-freezes-27-million-usdt-sanctions-garantex-russia\" rel=\"null\" target=\"null\" text=\"null\" title=\"null\">suspension of $27 million in USDt<\/a> (<a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/tether-price-index\" rel=\"null\" target=\"null\" text=\"null\" title=\"null\">USDT<\/a>) on its platform. The cryptocurrency exchange revealed on March 6 that it had temporarily halted all operations, including withdrawals. Additionally, US authorities <a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/garantex-cryptocurrency-exchange-disrupted-international-operation\" rel=\"null\" target=\"null\" text=\"null\" title=\"null\">seized<\/a> three domain names utilized to support Garantex\u2019s activities as ordered by a judge in the criminal case.<\/p>\n<p><template data-ct-widget=\"buzzsprout\" data-buzzsprout-podcast-id=\"2040516\" data-buzzsprout-episode-id=\"16668327\"\/><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Related: <\/strong><\/em><a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/us-sanctions-nemesis-darknet-marketplace-operator\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\" text=\"null\" title=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/us-sanctions-nemesis-darknet-marketplace-operator\"><em><strong>US sanctions crypto addresses connected to the Nemesis darknet marketplace<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The US Department of the Treasury\u2019s Office of Foreign Assets Control listed Garantex among its sanctioned entities in April 2022 for \u201cwillfully disregarding Anti-Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism (AML\/CFT) responsibilities and permitting their systems to be exploited by unlawful actors.\u201d The European Union also <a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/www.consilium.europa.eu\/en\/press\/press-releases\/2025\/02\/24\/16th-package-of-sanctions-on-russia-s-war-of-aggression-against-ukraine-eu-lists-additional-48-individuals-and-35-entities\/\" rel=\"null\" target=\"null\" text=\"null\" title=\"null\">implemented<\/a> sanctions against the exchange in February as part of the measures against \u201cRussia\u2019s aggression in Ukraine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Serda, a Russian citizen and co-founder of Garantex, appeared to still be at large when Be\u0161ciokov was arrested.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A representative from Garantex chose not to provide any comments. <\/p>\n<h2>Delays returning to the United States?<\/h2>\n<p>It remains uncertain what legal options Be\u0161ciokov may pursue in contesting his extradition to the US from India should he decide to take such action. Legal representatives for Terraform Labs co-founder Do Kwon, who was detained in Montenegro in March 2023 on unrelated allegations, repeatedly challenged court rulings concerning US extradition before he was ultimately <a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/do-kwon-united-states-custody-extradition-montenegro\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\" text=\"null\" title=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/do-kwon-united-states-custody-extradition-montenegro\">surrendered to authorities<\/a> in December 2024.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Former CEO Sam Bankman-Fried, who resided in the Bahamas when cryptocurrency exchange FTX collapsed in November 2022, was extradited from the island to the US to face allegations.
