{"id":9547,"date":"2025-03-10T08:03:33","date_gmt":"2025-03-10T07:03:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wsj-crypto.com\/?p=9547"},"modified":"2025-03-10T08:03:33","modified_gmt":"2025-03-10T07:03:33","slug":"mysterious-intruder-disrupts-pectra-upgrade-on-sepolia-network","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wsj-crypto.com\/index.php\/2025\/03\/10\/mysterious-intruder-disrupts-pectra-upgrade-on-sepolia-network\/","title":{"rendered":"Mysterious Intruder Disrupts Pectra Upgrade on Sepolia Network"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div data-v-93e1f8b6=\"\">\n<p>An Ethereum programmer claims that the latest Pectra enhancement of the Sepolia testnet encountered issues, exacerbated when an intruder utilized an \u201cedge case\u201d to facilitate the mining of void blocks.<\/p>\n<p>Pectra <a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/ethereum-pectra-upgrade-sepolia-testnet-mainnet-delay-possible\" rel=\"null\" target=\"null\" text=\"null\" title=\"null\">debuted on its ultimate testnet<\/a>, Sepolia, at 7:29 am on March 5, yet Ethereum programmer Marius van der Wijden stated in a March 8 <a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/mariusvanderwijden.github.io\/blog\/2025\/03\/08\/Sepolia\/\" rel=\"null\" target=\"null\" text=\"null\" title=\"null\">article<\/a> that the team promptly began receiving error notifications on their geth node along with the mining of empty blocks.<\/p>\n<p>The problem arose as a result of the deposit contract invoking the incorrect type of event \u2014 a transfer event instead of a deposit, according to Van der Wijden.<\/p>\n<p>A remedy was implemented, however, van der Wijden noted that one edge case was overlooked, and an unidentified individual took advantage by sending a 0-token transfer to the deposit address, which provoked the error once more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter a short time, we observed numerous empty blocks again, prompting us to check the transaction pools once more where we discovered another problematic transaction triggering the same edge case,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n<figure><figcaption style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p><em>Source: <\/em><a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/vdWijden\/status\/1898665884236882428\" rel=\"null\" target=\"null\" text=\"null\" title=\"null\"><em>Marius van der Wijden<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cInitially, we suspected that someone among the trusted validators had made an error, but we quickly became aware that this transaction stemmed from a newly funded account from the faucet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ERC-20 standard does not prohibit a zero token transfer, enabling anyone, even those without any tokens, to conduct transfers to another address, which the unidentified user discovered, remarked van der Wijden.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe only solution to halt the assault would be to filter out all transactions interacting with the deposit contract. Thus, we implemented a private fix, which we distributed to several of the DevOps nodes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had suspicions that the assailant was monitoring some of our discussions, so we opted not to announce the fix publicly but only applied updates to a few controlled nodes in order to achieve more filled blocks on the network,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Fork, Hard Fork, Upgrade\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.cointelegraph.com\/uploads\/2025-03\/01957e9c-a539-7c38-90e9-ce6344bab68e\" title=\"\"\/><figcaption style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p><em>Source: <\/em><a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Ang_marley_s3\/status\/1898691522524070141\" rel=\"null\" target=\"null\" text=\"null\" title=\"null\"><em>Marius van der Wijden<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>By 2 pm, all nodes had received the update, and the unidentified user transaction was successfully mined.<\/p>\n<p>Van der Wijden stated that they did not experience any loss of finalization during the event, and the concern was confined to Sepolia because they were operating a token-gated deposit contract rather than the standard mainnet deposit contract.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, the developers <a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/ethereum-pectra-upgrade-holesky-testnet\" rel=\"null\" target=\"null\" text=\"null\" title=\"null\">tested the Pectra upgrade on the Holesky testnet<\/a> on February 26, which also faced difficulties.<\/p>\n<p>Consequently, the developers have resolved to delay the Pectra upgrade until further testing can be completed.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Related: <\/strong><\/em><a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/ether-social-sentiment-hits-year-low-but-could-be-good-thing-santiment\" rel=\"null\" target=\"null\" text=\"null\" title=\"null\"><em><strong>Ether sentiment reaches yearly low but this may be a positive sign: Santiment<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The <a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/explained\/ethereums-next-upgrade-prague-electra-pectra-explained\" rel=\"null\" target=\"null\" text=\"null\" title=\"null\">Pectra fork<\/a> follows the network\u2019s Dencun enhancement, which reduced transaction costs for layer-2 systems and <a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/bot-driven-l2-transaction-failures-surge-following-ethereum-s-fee-reducing-upgrade\" rel=\"null\" target=\"null\" text=\"null\" title=\"null\">enhanced the economics<\/a> of Ethereum rollups.
