{"id":12155,"date":"2025-05-17T08:29:36","date_gmt":"2025-05-17T06:29:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wsj-crypto.com\/?p=12155"},"modified":"2025-05-17T08:29:36","modified_gmt":"2025-05-17T06:29:36","slug":"nostr-in-2025-echoes-of-bitcoins-early-days-in-2012","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wsj-crypto.com\/index.php\/2025\/05\/17\/nostr-in-2025-echoes-of-bitcoins-early-days-in-2012\/","title":{"rendered":"Nostr in 2025: Echoes of Bitcoin&#8217;s Early Days in 2012"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Recently, I had a conversation with Vitor Pomplona, the founder of Nostr client <a href=\"https:\/\/nostr.how\/en\/guides\/amethyst\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amethyst<\/a>, to explore how Nostr in 2025 closely resembles Bitcoin in 2012 \u2014 somewhat unrefined yet thrilling to engage with.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"\/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nostr.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nostr<\/a>, a decentralized framework for social media and other communication methods, is merely four years old, and developers are still working on enhancing the user experience within the applications they&#8217;ve built. These applications include platforms like <a href=\"https:\/\/primal.net\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Primal<\/a> (akin to X) to <a href=\"https:\/\/olas.app\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Olas<\/a> (similar to Instagram) to <a href=\"https:\/\/nostrapps.com\/yakihonne\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Yakihonne<\/a> (resembling Substack).<\/p>\n<p>What sets Nostr clients apart, however, is that users can \u201czap\u201d (transfer small quantities of) bitcoin to each other in order to express gratitude for the content shared by their peers.<\/p>\n<p>Pomplona remains optimistic that an increasing number of Nostr clients are beginning to gain momentum, much like Bitcoin did 13 years prior.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are observing the formation of communities and the movement of more funds,\u201d Pomplona shared with Bitcoin Magazine during the interview.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Bitcoin-Driven Creator Economy<\/h2>\n<p>Pomplona acknowledged that a significant aspect of social media is to provide avenues for users to monetize their creations in ways that are not feasible in their physical surroundings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Certain social media] users aspire to earn a living,\u201d Pomplona stated. \u201cThey believe they can accomplish more through social media than they can individually or within their localities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pomplona is confident that Nostr clients can help turn that aspiration into a reality, and he is committed to facilitating this for users.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur ultimate objective is: If we can enable creators to earn a living, we will succeed as a platform.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This possibility for users to make a living using Nostr increases daily, particularly as the Nostr user community grows and it continues to evolve as the <a href=\"https:\/\/bitcoinmagazine.com\/takes\/nostr-is-the-worlds-biggest-bitcoin-circular-economy-join-us\">largest bitcoin circular economy globally<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Amethyst<\/h2>\n<p>In the development of Amethyst, Pomplona envisioned a Nostr client that functioned as an all-encompassing app, inspired by a plan similar to what Elon Musk proposed for X (formerly Twitter).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmethyst emerged around the same period Elon was suggesting the acquisition of Twitter,\u201d Pomplona detailed. \u201cHe was proposing creating a mega app out of Twitter, and I pursued something similar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While Pomplona understands that Amethyst hasn&#8217;t fully realized this vision, he&#8217;s thrilled that it has assumed a different function. It acts as an incubator for individuals developing new Nostr clients.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmethyst assists everyone in launching their applications,\u201d he remarked. \u201cOlas originated from Amethyst.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nostr As A Bitcoin Onboarding Tool<\/h2>\n<p>Pomplona views Nostr as an excellent method to introduce people to Bitcoin, although he doesn\u2019t believe this should be the primary objective of Nostr clients.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe primary intention for [Nostr] applications is to encourage people to engage in their pursuits \u2014 to be creative, to converse with friends, or to communicate with family,\u201d Pomplona clarified.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo application should overtly discuss either Nostr or Bitcoin.
