Northeast Monsoon Brings Anticipated Rainfall to Various Regions, According to DOST Head

Various regions of the nation are anticipated to receive increased precipitation as a new atmospheric system arises with the arrival of the northeast monsoon, as per the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).

“May bago tayong meteorological system na sasalubong sa atin sa pagdating ng northeast monsoon—ito ay ang shear line, dito nagaganap ang mga pag-ulan [We will meet a new meteorological system with the onset of the northeast monsoon — this is the shear line and that’s where the precipitation regions are],” DOST Secretary Renato U. Solidum Jr. shared with BusinessWorld during a visit in Bacolod City on Monday.

The initiation of the northeast monsoon was announced by the DOST’s meteorological office on Monday evening and is expected to introduce cool and arid breezes across most regions of the nation.

These winds might engage with the warm and moist easterlies from the Pacific Ocean, creating a shear line that could lead to overcast and raining conditions in the impacted regions, Mr. Solidum mentioned.

The eastern sections of the nation, especially those in northern and central Luzon extending to the Bicol Region, are predicted to undergo rainy conditions due to the shear line and the impacts of the northeast monsoon, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) press update on Monday.

Moreover, during the northeast monsoon season, tropical storms that form toward the year-end are likely to batter the Visayas and Mindanao due to the establishment of a high-pressure region in the northern sector of the country, PAGASA noted.Edg Adrian A. Eva
