OpenAI has unveiled a new web browser driven by AI, offering a peek into how individuals will explore the internet and shop online utilizing AI assistants in the forthcoming future.
On Tuesday, the organization behind ChatGPT disclosed Atlas, an AI-driven browser centered around the chatbot, which is currently accessible solely on macOS for premium users.
The latest provision includes numerous features, such as browsing memories that enable ChatGPT to retain context from the websites users visit. Notably, the “agent mode” is a feature that particularly draws attention.
When utilizing Atlas in agent mode, the browser can investigate and scrutinize information and automate tasks in real-time while users keep browsing. It can also open tabs and engage with pages to complete tasks on users’ behalf, as explained by OpenAI.
“It’s now enhanced at researching and analyzing, automating duties, and organizing events or scheduling appointments while you navigate.”
In-browser personal aide
Atlas agent mode fundamentally integrates a personal aide within the web browser.
Users can automate activities like planning a dinner gathering with the AI agent managing a recipe, searching for stores with the necessary ingredients, placing them in a cart, and coordinating delivery.
The Atlas incorporates multiple safety measures, including the capability to restrict code execution in the browser, downloading files, or adding extensions. It cannot access other applications on users’ devices or file systems and will pause prior to executing actions on sensitive sites, such as financial institutions.

A glimpse into the future of agentic AI
The OpenAI browser represents one of the initial insights into what a future with agentic AI integrated into technology may resemble, while blockchain could further accelerate this evolution.
“We’ve stepped into the age of AI agents,” Frank Shaw, Microsoft’s chief communication officer, noted earlier this year.
“This emerging vision of the internet is an open agentic web, where AI agents make choices and carry out tasks on behalf of users or organizations,” he remarked at the time.
More recently, AI “agentic commerce” was a prominent subject at the Fed’s Payment Innovation Conference on Tuesday, with ARK Invest’s Cathie Wood, Coinbase’s chief financial officer Alesia Haas, and Google Cloud’s strategy lead Richard Widmann highlighting the benefits of AI agents for autonomous payment solutions.
