The leader of Belarus’s security organization stated that his agency was attempting to foster connections with Ukraine to assist in attaining a resolution to its protracted war with Russia, as reported by the nation’s state news outlet on Sunday.
Ivan Tertel’s remarks to state television came after reports last week indicated that a high-ranking Belarusian diplomat had engaged in discussions with Europeans to alleviate the isolation that has long been enforced on his nation, a close associate of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Tertel, whose statements were covered by the Belta news agency, mentioned that discussions with Ukrainian officials were crucial “in the present circumstances in order to reach an agreement.”
“This endeavor is also ongoing. Naturally, a great deal here relies on the Ukrainian side. Our president is striving as much as he can to stabilize the situation in the area,” said Tertel, whose agency continues to utilize its Soviet-era abbreviation KGB.
“We have achieved a balance of the interests of both parties in this quite complex scenario marked by rising tensions. I am persuaded that we can resolve this situation solely through discreet conversations and the pursuit of compromise.”
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko permitted the Kremlin to utilize his nation’s land to commence part of the 2022 conflict with Ukraine, yet has refrained from involving his military in the hostilities.
Lukashenko, in office since 1994, has long been ostracized by the West due to allegations of human rights abuses. Sanctions escalated after security forces suppressed protests by individuals accusing the president of manipulating his 2020 re-election, and once more because of his backing for the invasion.
However, US President Donald Trump has reached out to Lukashenko in recent months, labeling him a “highly regarded leader” and dispatching an envoy to Minsk, which resulted in the release of over 50 political detainees.
