The Philippines stands as a worldwide exemplar for microinsurance, with Pioneer Insurance leading the way, advocating for inclusive and scalable insurance solutions that are currently being observed and replicated globally.
This international leadership was reaffirmed when Pioneer Group Head Lorenzo Chan, Jr. received invitations to headline two esteemed international conferences recently held in Egypt and Austria.
His objective: to convey the Philippine microinsurance experience and assist other nations in duplicating its achievements.
From local creativity to global impact
Pioneer’s microinsurance success narrative is being presented on international platforms as a model for inclusive protection.
Mr. Chan recently spoke at the Insurance Federation of Egypt (IFE) Microinsurance Conference and the Africa Regional Conference on Inclusive Insurance in Luxor, Egypt, which was organized by the IFE, the Munich Re Foundation, and FinProbity Solutions.
The gathering brought together global leaders to exchange perspectives on enhancing financial inclusion through microinsurance.
In a one-on-one discussion with Wayne Clarke, CEO of World Class Manager, Mr. Chan recounted Pioneer’s microinsurance journey, detailing the evolution from overcoming doubts to providing timely, compassionate claims to millions.
He highlighted the significance of trust, technology, and community collaborations in fostering sustainable impact.
Shortly thereafter, Mr. Chan was also a prominent keynote speaker at the Sapiens International Client Conference in Vienna, Austria, where he underscored microinsurance as a crucial catalyst for financial resilience.
Mr. Chan also emphasized the necessity of prompt claims processing in areas susceptible to disasters and discussed Pioneer’s scalable methods for inclusive insurance, focusing on the customer, partnerships, pricing, and ongoing value enhancement.
Sapiens Chief Revenue Officer for EMEA and APAC, Raj Ghuman, praised the presentation, “Lorenzo is genuinely an inspiration. This exemplifies the essence of Pioneer. I always mention, people make the company — the company doesn’t define people. Remarkable job!”
Over the past decade, the Philippines has emerged as a key center for microinsurance innovation. CARD Pioneer Microinsurance, Inc. (CPMI), a collaboration between Pioneer Insurance and CARD MRI (Center for Agriculture and Rural Development Mutually Reinforcing Institutions), has played a pivotal role in expanding affordable, straightforward, and accessible insurance for underserved Filipinos.
“The Philippines is proud to lead in inclusive insurance,” stated Mr. Chan. “We are not merely safeguarding lives; we are establishing a model that yields results and empowers vulnerable communities worldwide.”
Sharing playbook: A worldwide learning platform
Microinsurance continues to be a fundamental offering across all entities under the Pioneer Group. In 2024, enrollments in Pioneer microinsurance exceeded 30 million. At the forefront of the group’s inclusive insurance initiatives is CARD Pioneer Microinsurance, Inc. (CPMI), the nation’s first microinsurance provider.
CPMI’s path to success is documented in the best-selling book titled Covering Nanay: The Philippine Microinsurance Journey, co-authored by its founders, Dr. Aristotle Alip and Lorenzo Chan, Jr. The book has garnered acclaim both domestically and internationally for its candid portrayal of CPMI’s challenges, setbacks, and even insider secrets.
