Ethereum finds itself at a crucial juncture. The interest in Ethereum has broadened to encompass not just technologists and enthusiasts, but also corporations, governmental entities, and ordinary individuals who are in search of effective solutions and concrete advantages. The Ethereum ecosystem is evolving to satisfy these requirements, and the Ethereum Foundation is poised to fulfill its role.
As detailed in the recent vision statement of the Ethereum Foundation, we have two primary objectives:
- Maximizing the number of individuals who (directly or indirectly) utilize Ethereum, in a manner that allows them to benefit from Ethereum’s core principles.
- Maximizing the durability of Ethereum’s technical and social frameworks.
Ecosystem Development (EcoDev) pertains to groups that assist in realizing these objectives at a societal or ecosystem level, rather than solely a technological level. These groups work to eliminate obstacles to practical usage, facilitate user onboarding to Ethereum, support Ethereum communities globally, provide funding through grants, and help manage the ecosystem to ensure Ethereum remains resilient and human-centric as it expands.
To enhance our ability to achieve these objectives, we are significantly broadening and reorganizing our EcoDev initiatives to concentrate on four essential areas.
Ecosystem Acceleration
We aim to help speed up the rate of ecosystem expansion, by collaborating closely with developers, founders, application teams, and businesses who intend to utilize Ethereum.
We are establishing four new teams to generate impact within these key adoption pathways:
- Enterprise relations: Clear resources and guidance customized for businesses embracing Ethereum.
- Developer growth: Engage, mentor, and assist the next wave of builders on Ethereum.
- App relations & research: Accelerating significant, user-facing Ethereum applications.
- Founder success: Non-financial assistance, providing feedback, connections, operational expertise, and mentorship.
These teams will comprise long-time EF members working in these fields (e.g., Austin Griffith in Developer Growth) and new recruits to broaden our skill sets and capacity.
At the heart of our EcoDev acceleration initiatives will be collaboration with existing networks and community members. Ethereum boasts a rich ecosystem of individuals and organizations already bolstering founders, developers, applications, and businesses, including L2s, accelerators, community gatherings, hackathon organizers, investors, educators, and more.
Ecosystem Amplification
Additional teams will assist to enhance the effects of our acceleration initiatives, as well as the EcoDev efforts conducted by the community.
These teams will assist us in comprehending and monitoring the growth of the ecosystem, organize targeted events to support strategic goals, utilize diverse media forms to educate and narrate vital stories about Ethereum, and employ new tools and AI to add greater leverage to all of our endeavors.
These teams represent evolutions of current teams at the EF, with the exception of EcoDev automation, which is new.
- Digital Studio (formerly the ethereum.org team): Our innovation and storytelling hub, crafting narrative-rich content, videos, publications, and unique visualizations that showcase Ethereum’s potential. Ethereum.org will remain one of the many initiatives this team develops.
- Strategic Events: Creating targeted gatherings, from intimate meetups to specialized one-day conferences.
- Ethereum Everywhere: A team dedicated to scaling local communities and hubs that assist app builders (team name is still a WIP)
- EcoDev Automation: Enhancing internal processes through intelligent automation and AI-driven tools, enabling teams to achieve more effectively.
Devcon/nect will persist as a team focused on organizing large-scale annual events for the Ethereum ecosystem like Devcon and Devconnect, but will continue to operate directly under the management team rather than being incorporated into the new EcoDev structure.
Support for Ecosystem
We shall persist in maintaining three squads aimed at coordinating financial and amplifying non-financial assistance essential for initiatives throughout the Ethereum ecosystem:
- ESP/Grant Assistance: Our grants initiative will see substantial modifications, focusing on more directed applications and non-financial aid. This group will assist EF teams with their funding initiatives, aid in evaluating certain grant requests, and oversee relationships with beneficiaries.
- Strategic Financial Initiatives: Jointly funding crucial public goods organizations that benefit the wider Ethereum ecosystem.
- Launchpad: Supporting organizations with operational arrangements, sustainable financing, governance, and additional challenges. Launchpad aids spin-offs from the EF, grant recipients, or other ecosystem entities that might gain from this support.
Long-Term Ecosystem Liberation
We will also keep pursuing numerous long-term projects aimed at eliminating barriers to adoption worldwide, organized into various streams such as:
- Policy Collaboration: Observing global matters relevant to the Ethereum ecosystem, pinpointing risks and opportunities where the EF can lend support, and engaging with policy organizations globally to promote favorable outcomes for Ethereum.
- Institutional Secretariat: Establishing enduring connections with governments and NGOs
- Academic Secretariat: Encouraging partnerships with universities, professors, and students to further blockchain technology.
It Requires an Ecosystem
As Ethereum expands, there is a growing responsibility for the ecosystem to nurture and safeguard that expansion. We’re eager to fulfill our role and contribute in innovative ways, yet we will not be solitary in this endeavor. We’re already working in close partnership with the broader ecosystem, which includes organizations, companies, startups, event coordinators, community participants, investors, developers, and many other collaborators who drive Ethereum’s expansion. If you wish to collaborate with us, reach out to James Smith!
The Ethereum ecosystem is in a constant state of flux. This indicates that our ecosystem development strategies will also continue to advance. We will persistently inquire: where must we intervene to accomplish what no one else can achieve today? Furthermore, we will continue striving to assist others in amplifying their impact on the ecosystem, ensuring that the Ethereum ecosystem becomes increasingly resilient over time.
