Greetings! This is Hsiao-Wei and Tomasz collaboratively composing this blog entry. We’ve now been inhabiting our new Co-Executive Director positions for nearly a month. The initial phase is behind us; it’s time to advance.
A Period of Transition and Possibility
Ethereum has always represented a voyage: a perpetually transforming ecosystem fueled by individuals who envision crafting a more open and decentralized world. While the Ethereum Foundation (EF) may have celebrated a decade of existence, it remains open to reinventing itself.
This year, EF adopted a fresh leadership model featuring dual Executive Directors. This structure infuses diverse and complementary viewpoints, heightening our capability to address intricate challenges. We are enthusiastic about seizing the opportunities and challenges ahead, driven by a profound commitment to Ethereum’s fundamental values and a vision rooted in stewardship, coordination, and long-term planning.
Crucially, EF is not a two-headed beast pulling in varied directions. Our partnership is founded on mutual respect, trust, and shared principles. We work together closely, challenge each other constructively, and ultimately progress as a cohesive team with aligned objectives.
Our Principles and Focus Areas
Looking to the future, we will operate under two pillars:
Guiding Principles (our core values) and Objectives (our pursuit of impact and resilience). Technical excellence is the cornerstone of everything we undertake, serving as the foundation that allows us to fulfill our mission.
As Executive Directors, our responsibility is to realize EF’s vision in an ever-changing world. Our role encompasses strategic planning, ecosystem stewardship, team leadership, and operational oversight. All in pursuit of Ethereum’s enduring success.
Values we advocate:
- Censorship Resistance: Ensuring that Ethereum remains a universally accessible network where anyone, anywhere, can transact and create without hindrances or outside control.
- Open Source Innovation: Promoting collaboration, transparency, and community-driven development through openly shared knowledge and tools.
- Privacy Protection: Safeguarding individual freedom and autonomy in a digital landscape by facilitating private interactions without compromising security.
- Security: Preserving trust, robustness, and resilience throughout the Ethereum ecosystem by prioritizing secure design and ongoing research.
These values form the bedrock guiding our technical decisions, support for the ecosystem, and long-term vision for Ethereum as a public good.
While keeping these values in mind, we’ve established key directions for the coming 12 months:
- Scaling Ethereum mainnet
- Scaling blobs
- Enhancing UX, including L2 interoperability + application layer
Collectively, this means enhancing interoperability and coordination between mainnet and L2s, improving UX, DevEx, providing applications and L2s with more visibility and focus at Devcon, amplifying their messages via communication channels.
Moreover, we recognize that we must expedite the journeys of developers, founders, and institutions as they navigate pathways toward building on and adopting Ethereum. The Ethereum Foundation possesses the knowledge and leaders who can mentor, guide, attract, and onboard talent.
Tomasz’s Note
Ethereum embarks on its next chapter. The values remain steadfast: open source, censorship resistance, privacy, and security. The Ethereum Foundation is evolving into an organization that will communicate increasingly openly, one that will engage in difficult dialogues without hesitation.
We will prioritize speed of execution, accountability, clear goals, objectives, and metrics to monitor progress. Our focus will be on the success of the Ethereum mainnet protocol. Ethereum mainnet will continue to exist as a global, neutral network, a protocol trusted to maintain its trustless nature. We will dedicate ourselves to the prosperity of Ethereum mainnet and the entire ecosystem—L2s that promote mass adoption and myriad advantages for users, as well as a mainnet that serves as both a firm foundation and a flexible network supporting all transactions and coordination mechanisms. We are thrilled about this journey—one that traverses one of the most inspiring technological and societal transformations we will ever witness, a journey that we will undertake together—visionaries and practical builders alike.
In the coming year, we will prioritize scaling—scaling Ethereum mainnet (L1), aiding the success of L2 chains by providing optimal architecture for scalability, securing their networks, and instilling confidence in their users. Our aim is to create an ecosystem of chains that feels cohesive by offering the best UX, design, and interoperability, while achieving scalability through engineering excellence and pioneering research.
Hsiao-Wei’s Note
In the forthcoming months, my focus will be on enhancing EF’s operations to fortify the ecosystem’s growth. A flexible and capable foundation empowers us to better fulfill Ethereum’s long-term mission.
As we advance with greater clarity, one of our aims is to improve support for Ethereum’s application layer. We will assist builders and users by refining the developer and user experience, clarifying standards, strengthening ecosystems, and facilitating the progression from ideas to live applications.
We are striving to enhance our planning, prioritizing, and coordination across teams within EF and throughout the broader ecosystem, ensuring our efforts align with community needs and Ethereum’s cypherpunk ethos. Strengthening EF is merely one aspect of the transition. True momentum arises from the energy and creativity of the global Ethereum ecosystem.
A Future Created Together
Ethereum is not a singular entity. It is a vibrant, dynamic network encompassing communities, builders, researchers, artists, educators, and visionaries. It is global, multifaceted, and proudly decentralized. We are continually inspired by the ingenuity and resilience of the ecosystem. EF will continue to engage where our presence is most impactful, but will also make room when the ecosystem thrives independently. This represents a community-driven future.
The path ahead is filled with opportunities. Ethereum has already redefined what’s achievable in technology, finance, governance, and beyond. To everyone who is building, teaching, researching, experimenting, and envisioning new futures: thank you. Together, we are creating something more significant than any single team, project, or generation can achieve. We’re honored to walk this path with you and enthusiastic about what lies ahead.
