Governance and Leadership within the Ethereum Foundation

“`html

The recent selections of the two Co-Executive Directors and President are part of a broader initiative to enhance the Ethereum Foundation, and this arrangement is intended to ensure our vision, strategic and well-balanced execution, technical guidance, and ecosystem advancement. This blog aims to elucidate the framework of the management team and the board.

New Management (Strategic & Operational Execution)

EF’s Co-EDs will collaborate with other management members to lead and implement initiatives. You can anticipate hearing from members of EF management frequently regarding their plans, decisions, and other recent modifications.

  • Hsiao-Wei Wang, Co-Executive Director
  • Tomasz K. Stańczak, Co-Executive Director
  • Bastian Aue – Areas of focus: Organizational strategy, Recruitment and Training, Co-stewards
  • Josh Stark – Areas of focus: Project implementation, Communications & marketing, Co-stewards

Board of Directors (Oversight & Vision)

The EF board acts as a safeguarding council to uphold the essence and spirit of EF, ensuring adherence as a Swiss foundation. The board establishes the vision and monitors that the overarching strategies and decisions by management are in line with the Foundation’s principles. The Board is also tasked with appointing Executive Director(s) and, when necessary, ending the employment of executives. The current board of directors includes:

  • Vitalik Buterin, Founder – continues to offer technical and intellectual direction to the wider Ethereum ecosystem
  • Aya Miyaguchi, President – shapes the Ethereum Foundation’s vision with fellow board members. Manages crucial external relationships
  • Patrick Storchenegger, Swiss counsel – functions as the Swiss representative for legal and regulatory issues
  • Hsiao-Wei Wang, Co-Executive Director – acts as a liaison between the board, executives, and management

The board has communicated the vision, guiding principles, and objectives for the upcoming years to the management team. We look forward to further enhancing the board to better fulfill its mission over time.

Tomasz and Hsiao-Wei Wang’s selection as Co-EDs is an atypical choice, but one that enables them to support one another during a pivotal time for the Ethereum ecosystem and EF similarly.

Tomasz will be empowered to assist EF in implementing robust and comprehensive changes based on his understanding of community and technological requirements while remaining engaged with other companies (Nethermind and venture relationships). The board and Tomasz have mutually agreed upon an anticipated two-year term for his Co-ED position at EF to take advantage of his established strategic execution expertise and experience, particularly as the following couple of years present substantial opportunities for Ethereum.

Hsiao-Wei’s dual roles on the board and as Executive Director, alongside her research background, will aid her in serving as a connector between the board and management, with a focus on the organization’s needs stemming from a profound comprehension of its history and standing.
