Ethereum.org: Progress Report #1

⭐ Presenting Ethereum Studio

We are thrilled to unveil version 1.0 of Ethereum Studio: a straightforward web-based IDE, which operates directly on ethereum.org

One of the most frequent recommendations we’ve acquired for Ethereum.org is to enhance the developer experience. While the website guided users to ample external resources, it was missing an enticing route that would encourage a developer to immediately experiment with Ethereum.

The aim of Ethereum Studio is to enable developers to commence building on Ethereum in just minutes, minimizing any obstacles. Studio allows users to:

  • Draft and evaluate smart contracts in the browser
  • Link smart contracts to a front-end web application
  • Kickstart their application with 3 template tutorials
  • Share your project with a single click

In addition to the Studio itself, we’ve introduced a new Getting Started page within the Developer section. This serves as a more novice-friendly landing page for developers, presenting the Studio and offering links to other web-based learning paths.

The intent of Studio isn’t to supplant or compete with the vast web-based educational resources already accessible for Ethereum. Rather, we aim for Studio to serve as a simple initial step to engage a developer and get them interested before guiding them towards additional resources, tools, or events to further their exploration of Ethereum.

To create Ethereum Studio, we partnered with Superblocks. We are immensely grateful to the Superblocks team for their dedication to refining this tool. We also wish to acknowledge many others who made this venture possible: Andreas Wallendahl, Chris Ward, Robbie Bent, Martin Tellechea, and all those who contributed feedback and suggestions.

Ethereum Studio is open-source, and all the code can be accessed here. We’ll continue to enhance the Studio over time, and we’ve already outlined many upgrades for version 1.1. If you’re interested in participating, learn how to contribute here! If you simply wish to share feedback, kindly complete this brief survey.

🦄 Persona reorganization

In recent months, we have been striving to better grasp the user personas connected with Ethereum.org. This entails examining keyword search volumes, assessing site traffic, analyzing user personas from similar websites, and engaging with our users.

This endeavor has led us to streamline the top-level structure of Ethereum.org, organizing it around three primary personas:

  • Individuals: individual ETH holders, users, and community participants
  • Developers: developers, or anyone with a technical curiosity in Ethereum
  • Enterprise: enterprises, companies, and other organizations looking to comprehend the advantages Ethereum can offer them.

This straightforward categorization encompasses nearly all of the user paths we contemplated during our analysis. For now, this is merely an re-organization of existing content, which establishes a solid foundation for site expansion in the future.

In the upcoming weeks, we will also be releasing our research that lead us to this re-organization, with the hope that it proves beneficial to the community, and that others can highlight ways we can enhance.

🛠 Bounties for ethereum.org development

Two weeks ago, we launched 10 bounties on Gitcoin to explore whether we could engage the community’s assistance to expedite the website development. To date, it’s been an immense success – we received submissions for every bounty, and most of these modifications have already been incorporated into the site. Our gratitude goes out to everyone who submitted their work!

Look forward to more bounties for Ethereum.org in the future – be sure to follow the @ethdotorg Twitter account, where we’ll announce them upon release.

🎯 What’s on the horizon?

Here’s a glimpse of our focus areas for the forthcoming weeks:

  • 🎨 Comprehensive design enhancements & adjustments, implementation of a unified design system for new pages
  • 👨‍👩‍👦‍👦 New materials to familiarize individuals with the Ethereum community
  • 🔍 Disseminating our persona-research
  • 🗣️ Translating third-party resources
  • ✨ Much more to come!
