Reflecting on 2023, and a preview of what awaits in 2024
2023 proved to be a remarkable year for the team behind the ethereum.org website, and its community — we already feel a hint of nostalgia, but it’s essential to take a moment to celebrate the initiatives the ethereum.org community supported us in developing throughout 2023 and to maintain the momentum into 2024.
With that in mind, we have prepared a summary featuring the highlights of the ethereum.org community in 2023 — enjoy the read!
The highlights
📚 ethereum.org Translatathon
With 56 languages, 217 participants, and a staggering 1.47 million words (🤯) translated in a week-long online contest, the Translatathon established the importance of consistently enhancing accessibility in Web3, one word at a time. It stands as one of our proudest accomplishments, marked by an impact and scope so exceptional it warranted its own summary post!
🔡 Translated images and diagrams
If it wasn’t clear, we firmly believe that the experience of individuals who do not speak English should match that of those who do. Thus, we recognized that while our pages were translated into Spanish (for instance), having all diagrams and images in English was less than optimal. Our team devised a process for translating visual content, significantly enhancing the experience for everyone visiting our site who does not speak English.
👛 Interactive wallet walkthroughs
Eager to embark on your web3 adventure but slightly apprehensive about jumping right in and downloading a dapp? We’ve all felt that before. With this in mind, the ethereum.org team has crafted user-friendly guides to wallet usage, enriching the onboarding process for new Ethereum users. Try it out and share your thoughts with us 😀.
🤔 Test your Ethereum knowledge with Quizzes
A learning hub without a learning game? Well, that was ethereum.org prior to June 2023… now, you can assess your Ethereum knowledge by taking one (or all) of the eight interactive quizzes available on the Quiz Hub. The community is helping to broaden our quiz collection, so if you have ideas or wish to contribute by proposing questions, check out our contributing guide!
✍️ ethereum.org Writers Cohort
Try anything once, twice if you enjoy it — and this was the reason we hosted two iterations of ethereum.org’s Writers Cohort: a 3-week online course for individuals interested in writing about any Ethereum-related subject of their choosing. With over 400 participants and more than 540 articles published, we can confidently assert that bringing our community together to learn, articulate their ideas, and support each other throughout the process was the primary highlight of this initiative! 🛣️ Protocol roadmap: (almost) everything in one location
Ethereum’s roadmap is dynamic and constantly evolving, but we remain plugged into the latest proposals from creators worldwide and have established a detailed hub outlining Ethereum’s protocol roadmap. 🏠 Geth and Solidity: a fresh home on the internet
Along with maintaining ethereum.org, our core team also supports web development across other projects in the EF community. Throughout the past year, we’ve focused on designing and launching new websites for go-ethereum and Solidity, and we couldn’t be more proud of the outcome — and more importantly, the difference this can make to the Ethereum ecosystem.
🖼️ New year, fresh illustrations
We entered our transformation phase by commissioning eight new illustrations for ethereum.org, now showcased on various pages throughout the site (check some: Layer 2, Developers’ home, Community Hub). Furthermore, these artworks are open-source, and we encourage their usage within the Ethereum community. Explore our assets page for additional resources (and inspiration)!
🤲 ethereum.org Contributors Round @ GG19
With the help of some amazing individuals at Gitcoin, we initiated a support round to give back and reward community members who made significant contributions on ethereum.org. In total,
“`19 individuals received awards, and this initiative affirmed our intention to explore additional avenues for delivering value to our community in 2024!
🧦 New merchandise, who is this?
As a gesture of gratitude to our contributors: in November, we sent out over 100 swag boxes to ethereum.org community members – pictures of socks have flooded our Twitter feed… well, at the very least we can all agree they were rather fashionable!
🎲 Hacking and playing in the endless garden
Midway through 2023, a concept began to take shape — how about we organize a gathering where people could step back a bit from the frenzy of web3 events and spend quality time relaxing and playing cards/board games with the community? With that idea in mind, we held (in)finite games at Devconnect IST and the response from the Ethereum community was extremely favorable. Unfortunately (or maybe not), our team got so caught up in playing Uno that they neglected to take a photo… perhaps we should plan a second edition at Devcon SEA then?
🧭 Navigation redesign
ethereum.org is continually evolving. Before we say goodbye to an eventful year, our team revamped the website’s menu navigation, enhancing the information architecture for improved user navigation. We are rolling this out in early Q1, so stay tuned for this update.
🧰 Full migration to NextJS
With over 16,000 pages and millions of views every year, we cannot ignore the engine that keeps this vessel moving! After much effort, numerous challenges, and endless PRs, we successfully transitioned the ethereum.org tech stack to NextJS, paving the path for enhanced site performance, accessibility, and scalability. We are thrilled to deliver many new features in 2024 made possible by this transition!
